However, the deal is on standby as the NBA launched an investigation on Leonard and the Clippers for an alleged attempt to circumvent the salary cap. Leonard is due to earn $50.3 million in 2026-27 in the final year of his current contract. Stephen A. Smith said recently that he feels the league will end up finding wrongdoing. Smith claimed that if the allegations are true, several punishments should be initiated, including a season-long suspension for Kawhi Leonard, fines, and the Clippers losing future draft capital. Investigative sports reporter Pablo Torre shared his findings regarding Leonard's situation in Los Angeles back in September 2025. He claimed on his "Pablo Torre Finds Out" podcast that the 14-year veteran allegedly accepted a sponsorship with a now bankrupt company called Aspiration. Torre most recently reported that Leonard was allegedly sponsored by another company called Daktronics, which supposedly supplied the Clippers with the video board in the Inuit Dome arena. Torre claims that, like Aspiration, Daktronics was used as a way to funnel money from the Clippers through the company, and to Kawhi Leonard. As of Monday, August 10, the investigations are ongoing. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is expected to announce the findings at some point before the start of the 2026-27 campaign. Leonard is coming off a solid season with the Clippers, where he averaged 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.9 steals per contest while shooting 50.5% from the floor and 38.7% from beyond the three-point line.
