The Los Angeles Clippers have officially completed the Kawhi Leonard trade with Toronto and accepted historic NBA sanctions, forcing a major organizational reset. Owner Steve Ballmer announced compliance with the league's ruling, which strips the team of five first-round picks from 2029 to 2033. This comes after a tough playoff exit where their last result was a 120-101 loss to the Denver Nuggets on May 3, 2025.

The Clippers are sending Kawhi Leonard back to the Toronto Raptors. In return, Los Angeles receives Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round selections. The Raptors had paused the deal on July 9 pending the NBA's investigation into salary-cap violations related to Leonard.

This trade provides a critical lifeline. Without those incoming Toronto picks, the Clippers' draft capital would be devastated by the league's punishment. The NBA hammered the team for millions in off-the-books, no-show endorsements for the oft-injured 35-year-old forward.

The franchise faces years of limited draft assets and the lingering scandal. A major front office overhaul is required, starting with team president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank. The organization was an easy mark for Leonard during his free agency, and he took full advantage.

Leonard never led the Clippers to an NBA Finals appearance. The team also traded five first-round picks and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to Oklahoma City for Paul George to meet his demands. The NBA's sanctions are a direct response to the cap-circumventing moves made for him.

Tyronn Lue will coach a team featuring Brandon Ingram, Darius Garland, Rui Hachimura, and recent No. 5 overall pick Keaton Wagler. They project as a competitive regular-season squad. Their recent form shows two wins and three losses in their last five games (LWLLW).

That stretch included close playoff battles with Denver: a 111-105 win on May 2, 2025, followed by a 131-115 loss on April 30, 2025. You can review the full playoff series and upcoming schedule on our [fixtures](/fixtures) page.

The Clippers' new strategy involves using their limited trade assets to acquire disgruntled or overpaid players from other teams. The goal is to get those teams to include future draft picks as sweeteners. It's an unglamorous but necessary path to restocking the cupboard.

Cap room might open up by the 2027 or 2028 offseason. But big stars rarely hit free agency anymore. They prefer to get traded to retain Bird rights and maximize earnings. So draft capital, however acquired, is the new currency.

The immediate future is about damage control. Ballmer initially vowed to fight the sanctions but has now accepted them. Fans can finally exhale knowing the direction, even if it's a difficult one. The Leonard era is over, and a cautious rebuild has begun under a cloud of penalties.
